How does the scheme work?

There’s a real shortage of affordable properties to rent in the Mendip area. So Mendip Housing and Mendip District Council want to find new ways to help people in need of housing.

  • You lease your home to Mendip Housing for between two and five years
  • We let it to people at an affordable rent
  • We guarantee to pay you the rent, even if the tenants move out
  • We will manage all aspects of the tenancy for you, including most repairs
  • We carry out regular inspections of your property
  • At the end of our lease with you, we promise to hand back your house in a good condition.

Other things you need to know

  • We will need to agree an affordable rent with you before taking a lease on the property but you are guaranteed rental income 52 weeks of the year
  • There is a competitive management fee
  • We need unfurnished houses and flats but with carpets and curtains. We would prefer properties with no kitchen appliances (eg cookers and fridges)
  • We are looking for properties in Frome, Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury, Street and Wells. We will consider rural homes but only in villages with good bus links to the main towns

This joint venture between Mendip District Council and Mendip Housing will provide good quality homes for people in the highest housing need.

What is Mendip Housing?

Mendip Housing was set up as a separate housing association in 2001. We are a Registered Social Landlord and operate on a not-for-profit basis.

We successfully manage more than 4,000 of our own properties across central Somerset.

We have a lot of experience looking after tenants and your property will be managed by an experienced housing officer who will make regular property inspections. We have an excellent repairs’ record as well.

We also strive to create harmonious neighbourhoods in the local community.
