LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!

It’s party time at a Chilcompton sheltered housing scheme after the official opening of a new communal room for social get-togethers.

Residents at Greenways, which is run by Flourish Homes, have been campaigning for a meeting space for years so that the 31 bungalow tenants have somewhere to meet socially.

On hand to declare the communal room open on Thursday afternoon (July 26) was ex-Mendip District Councillor Des Mattick who has also campaigned for a communal hall in the village.

“I was a councillor for 22 years and right from the start I wanted to get a communal hall in Chilcompton. This is lovely to see! So look after it and I hop you have many happy times here.”

The communal room, which also houses the scheme manager’s office and has a small kitchen and disabled lavatories, will be available for a variety of social events, from coffee mornings to weekly bingo and board game sessions and a monthly communion service, for the scheme’s tenants. Villagers will also be encouraged to come along to the events to build up a wider community spirit. The room is also available to hire for suitable events.

“This is a great scheme that desperately needed a place for the residents to get together and have some fun!” said Flourish Homes’s Supported Housing Area Manager for Frome Betty Bond. “They have very successfully organised trips and other events but this room will enable them to have regular opportunities to socialise right on their doorstep.”

The work was organised by the planned maintenance department of Flourish Homes, which is a member of the Aster Group. The scheme was designed by Douglas Smith Architects, Glastonbury, and the building works are being undertaken by Wells’ builders Morgan’s.
