ICING ON THE CAKE FOR NEW HOMES

It was the icing on the cake for Flourish Homes when the local housing association organised a special opening ceremony at new homes in Churchill Road East in Wells.

The new family homes have been built on the site of 26 garages which were knocked down to make way for the six three bedroomed houses. The new homes will be known as 1 – 6 Churchill Terrace.

Representatives from the organisations involved in the construction of the homes, including builders DB Russell Construction and Mendip District Council dropped into No 6 to see what new social housing looks like.

The timber-framed homes are built to the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 so have good energy and sound insulation. Each house has also been fitted with solar panels to heat hot water. Kitchens also have a recycling bin to help tenants easily sort waste and there are wooden bin stores outside. Each of the gardens also comes with a compost bin, water butt to collect rainwater and a garden shed for extra storage.

The scheme cost around £600,000, half of which has come from the Homes and Communities Agency through New Futures, the Aster Group-led partnership of south-west based housing associations. The homes will be rented through Homefinder Somerset, the new way that social housing in the county is allocated to those in housing need and families are due to move in by the end of August.

The new homes are part of Flourish Homes’s development plans to build around 600 new homes over the next five years in Somerset.
